About the book

The simple magic of Ed Emberley

in: Etc.

Not long ago I stumbled onto Ed Emberley's wonderful drawing books: "Ed Emberley's Drawing Book of Animals" and "Ed Emberley's Drawing Book: Make a World". Despite their slim profiles, they contain hundreds of simple instructions for drawing whimsical creatures and objects — but are spare enough to leave plenty of room for imagination. I was touched by the dedication in one of the books (which I can't remember exactly, but it went something like this): "For the boy I was, the book I would have wanted."

Be sure to visit Emberly's website — you'll find printable coloring pages, step-by-step videos, activities, and information about his books.

Be sure to check out Ed Emberley’s Complete Funprint Drawing Book! We got it for my 5 year old’s birthday in March and it was a big hit! You can see some of the artwork she made on my blog.

Oh, I love Ed Emberly! Fond memories. 🙂 Can’t wait for my son to be old enough. Hmm, my niece will be 8 in a few weeks…sounds like a perfect gift…

Oh my goodness! I just nearly blew a gasket I’m so excited! I remember Ed’s books from when I was very little boy. It never occured to me that there would be a website (well, I didn’t even know if he was still around, to be blunt — this was over 30 years ago that I am remembering). I am utterly thrilled– thank you so much for bringing it to attention.

I *love* Ed Emberley! Sometimes we have family art night at our house, and we get out big pieces of butcher paper and sit around the table and draw, and Ed Emberley books usually get pulled out.

I had these books as a kid, and when I saw the cover it just sent me right back there. I loved them so much, thanks for the reminder to pick them up for my son’s sixth birthday next month. Didn’t know about the web site either.

I LOVED this book as a child! It was actually my brother’s book and I stole it from him all the time. Two years ago I found it at the book fair in the school I work at and got it for my nephew (my brother’s son). But before I gave it to him, I have to admit that I went through the entire book drawing all the animals agian! My newphew (and his dad) both love it and use it a ton two years later!

I recently got back my Ed books from childhood and gave them to my son. He loves them as much as I did. I’m so glad they are still around and people still love them.
